BackupKit 2026.8.1
The first public release. BackupKit runs unattended, encrypted, scheduled backups to storage you already own — a NAS, an S3 bucket, a self-hosted Nextcloud, a cloud drive you already pay for — and gets the data back in one click when you need it.
Scheduled backups
- • Daily, weekly on specific days, custom intervals in hours, days or weeks, or manual only.
- • Missed-run policy per job: skip it, run immediately, or wait for the next slot — for the nights the machine was off.
- • Pause and resume a job without losing its configuration.
24 storage destinations
- • Protocols: FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV. Network and local: NAS, network shares, local and external drives.
- • Clouds: Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, pCloud, Box, MEGA. Self-hosted: ownCloud, Nextcloud, Seafile.
- • Object storage: Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, and S3-compatible providers including Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi and DigitalOcean Spaces. Your bucket, your keys.
- • Unlimited accounts per provider, and destinations can be mixed across jobs.
- • Any connected storage can be the source, not just your PC — a NAS to a bucket, Dropbox to a NAS, SFTP to OneDrive.
Encryption before upload
- • Plain password, AES-128 or AES-256, applied on your machine before anything is sent. The key never leaves the device.
- • Archives are standard AES-encrypted zips — openable with 7-Zip or any AES-zip tool, with or without BackupKit installed.
Restore and history
- • One-click restore, to the original location or anywhere else you choose.
- • Per-run history with duration, transferred size and status, plus detailed logs when a run needs explaining.
- • Retention by age or by number of versions, so old copies clean themselves up.
Health dashboard and notifications
- • Every job's state at a glance: green for a clean run, yellow for delayed or partial, red for failed — and the log says why.
- • Email (SMTP), Telegram, webhooks, local apps or scripts, and in-app popups. Configured once, enabled per job on success, failure or missed run.
Compression
- • Zip compression with selectable levels, so documents and code cost far less to store than they do raw.
Not in this release
Named here so nothing above is mistaken for something it isn't. These are planned, not shipped:
- • Incremental backups — every version is currently a full compressed archive.
- • Windows shell extension, tray status icon, and bandwidth throttling.
Requirements and licensing
- • Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. The installer is code-signed.
- • 30-day full-feature trial, started from the app — no payment details required.
- • Each licence covers 3 personal devices.
